March 1, 2010 by Jorge Arrieta

exhibition-parthenon-yances

My dad, Jorge Yances, is having an art exhibition at the Parthenon titled, “Cartagena Memories.” The work recently debuted at The Museo Historico de Cartagena in Colombia, South America.

The artwork takes us on a journey into a surreal world where past, present and future meander through a place where realism and imagination are one in subject and technique. The show opens Friday March 5 from 6-8pm and continues to June 26. You can go to his website yances.com for more images. There will be many people there Friday including myself so come out and enjoy!

Popsicles and Grenades Art Sale Online

February 2, 2010 by Jorge Arrieta

art-sale-media-bias-america-control

I have decided that since art galleries take around 50% of the sale price of my work that I am going to sell it to you without their markup! So listed here are three framed limited edition archival prints in a great black wood frame.

Up first is The Media - represented in this American flag with words like smut, scandal, storms, spend, and scare that form the American red and white stripes. All of these “news stories” are what keep you distracted from what is really important. (Why did I not add “Sports” to this? I must have been on the edge of my seat watching the exciting game or glued to those important commercials or was I listening to the life changing play by play? Who knows ……. ………. ………. ………wait ……… ……… ….. just a ……. ... ..…….. …. I’m listening ….... .…….. ……. hold on …..… one minute . ..… almost . ... ..… ok sorry.. .… what was I saying? My apologies, I was changing the channel.)

Up next is Smoking is Good for You! Or is it Cigarettes are Good for You! Well either way that is what the doctors used to tell us - and I freakin’ believed them man! Thankfully I have decided to think for myself now.

Finally we have Pink! What does this flag represent? You tell me and if I enjoy your answer I will give it to you for FREE and you can Give it to your dog for Valentine’s Day!

My Poster Published in a Book

October 29, 2009 by Jorge Arrieta

My Workers Rights poster has been published in a book, Art for Obama: Designing Manifest Hope and the Campaign for Change. O.K so I have only two complaints. They used a photograph of my poster and not the high resolution file that I sent them and so the image quality is not good. The other issue is, well if you read the title of the book then you know where I’m coming from…

My poster is in the video at about 1:27 and that makes me happy. Proceeds from the book go to Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America.

You can get the Designing Manifest Hope book here at Amazon!

There are many great artists in the book and I am honored to be included among them.

Samuel Porter Jones

October 12, 2009 by Jorge Arrieta

samuel-porter-jonesLately I have had the pleasure to work on a documentary about Samuel Porter Jones. Sam Jones was a lawyer, a drunkard and finally a preeminent evagalist. Legend has it that Riverboat captain, Thomas Green Ryman and friends attended a sermon by Sam Jones with the intention of driving him out of town, but upon hearing Sam’s sermon, Ryman decided to build a tabernacle for Sam to hold revival meetings. This place in Nashville, Tennessee was later named the Ryman Auditorium. samuel-porter-jones-church

Jeff Wyatt Wilson of Wilson Independent Studios, a friend and great filmmaker, has several important rolls on this project and has kindly gotten me involved. Check out his site to see the trailer of his awesome latest film, Any Day Now and other cool film work.sam-porter-jones-young-boy

A couple of weeks ago we shot at a church in Cartersville, Georgia that was built in the mid 1800’s. The photo is in the back of the church by a very old graveyard. Last week I built a replica of an 1850’s style blackboard that turned out well and is in the background of the bottom photograph with Sam Jones as a boy at school. (The boy is actually Jeff’s son, Gideon Wilson)

A random quote from Sam P. Jones:

“The tune of America is pitched to the dollar.”

Reporter - Intense trailer

August 13, 2009 by Jorge Arrieta

Reporter is “the documentary that follows NY Times reporter Nicholas Kristof to Congo and probes the depth of the West’s sympathy fatigue level while daring us to not take any high ground but actually sit on some ground, some real, painful ground.” – Art Threat

The trailer is incredibly intense and I have yet to see if the film lives up to its standards. Reporter attempts to present a powerful call to action that helping the Congolese is just a click away. Perhaps…

If you get a chance please go to the Reporter site to learn more about what most people are not telling you. Then go check out Art Threat - a web magazine about politics and the arts.

And the Winner is…

dj-justice-imprintThe July Poster Giveaway has ended and the winner is DJ Justice! Go to his website “the art of justice” and check out some of his work like the wonderful photograph to the left. On his site you will find an artist statement that begins, “Some people find it odd that I was nearly 40-years-old before I did my first painting.” I found those words inspiring and quite intriguing. He also notes a quote from Van Gogh that may motivate you to strive for your goals, “If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.”

Thanks for everyone who participated in the giveaway! There are some big changes coming to this site and more free giveaways. I have also begun serious work on my new film and will keep you informed on the exciting details.

My Posters Sold Out - Let’s Cut a Rug!

July 7, 2009 by Jorge Arrieta

My posters for the Jamboree sold out this weekend! As I mentioned in a previous post, some of the money goes back to the Jamboree and $250 will go to Smile Train for surgery needed to give a child a new smile and a new life. Thanks to everyone who purchased one - every time you look at your art there will be a child smiling back at you!

I also want to thank Mary Anne and Jack Barton for organizing and promoting the posters and for making our stay great. I truly recommend the Smithville Jamboree to anyone interested in going to a wonderful small town, meeting the nicest people in the United States and having a good time.

You do not have to take my word for it, just check out the video of my daughter cutting a rug! Goodbye Phillip Glass and hello Flatt and Scruggs!
